I recently was given a gift voucher to go tandem paragliding over Cape Town. Now I must be honest, I wasn’t keen to start with. I’m a somewhat fearful of heights, but live by the philiosophy of “I’ll try almost anything once”. Plus, if I managed to pluck up the courage, it would provide on opportunity to snap some really awesome pics from an entirely new perspective !
Cape Town is one of the most beautiful places in the world, the picturesque scenery is unforgettable. Table Mountain and Robben Island are big local and tourist attractions. Table Mountain National park is a great hiking spot and offers a variety of beautiful plant life. The Waterfront has an array of restaurants and clothing stores, and serves as a beautiful setting for an amazing day out. One of the most unique ways to experience the breathtaking beauty of the city is to go tandem paragliding in Cape Town. You can glide across Camps bay, Green point, Table Mountain and Waterfront.
Paragliding is a free-flying aircraft that is foot launched. This activity allows the glider to float across the sky, and the gliders can be in the air for more than 3 hours. Parasailing refers to when an individual is towed by a boat while attached to a parasail. Parasailing is divided into parts; aquatic parasailing refers to soaring across water and terrestrial parasailing refers to soaring across land while being towed by a vehicle. Neither is easy to do whilst clutching onto your Nikon.

If a thrilling unforgettable experience is what you’re seeking then paragliding is what you need, do not let fear hold you back. Statistically paragliding is safer than driving and even horseback riding, but the activity involves gliding at great heights which naturally includes a few safety precautions.
Preparation is imperative; firstly you should be mentally and physically prepared. You should be very aware of your surroundings and focused at all times. You should also be certain that the weather conditions are favourable, it is strongly suggested that one should not go paragliding in winds that exceed 15 meters per hour unless you’re professionally trained. No one should ever fly in winds between 20-30 meters per hour. In addition to this the paragliding equipment should be inspected regularly.
Paragliding is physically and mentally beneficial. With Tandem paragliding, the pilot does most of the work and the customer is able to fully take in the incredible experience, thus relieving stress as all of your focus is on floating in the sky. It helps strengthen the upper body strength of the participant, as it is needed to control the parachute. The adrenalines rush provided by the activity burns calories and an estimated 230 calories can be burnt per session. Paragliding is great for helping people overcome their fear of heights, the experience is both thrilling and safe and the control over the experience is what generally helps the participants with their fears. The feeling of doing something so extreme often boosts the participant’s confidence.
The opportunity to glide across the sky, and take in the amazing scenery in one of the best ways possible seems almost too good to miss. If paragliding was not on your bucket list, it should be now because it promises to be a once in a lifetime experience.
I have to admit I had an absolutely thrilling experience and almost forgot to snap some photos I was so excited, but I did remember to get my trusty Nikon out eventually and managed to shoot off some stunning shots. Keep a look out for them in the gallery.
